Apart from years ago when my two year old would throw an out an out temper tantrum at the tiniest opposition to her desires, I have rarely seen such a childish egotistical display as that given by Damien Thiery yesterday at the Linkebeek Town meeting. Ex acting mayor Thiery simply cannot understand why the world does not evolve around him and so he is throwing a Thiery tantrum to get our attention.
Many expats ask “Why do the Flemish want to split Belgium? What is the problem?” Well geez buddy, how long have you got? Do you want the long version or the short version? Actually, no matter how many hours or days we have, we will probably never understand the entire situation. However, this week in the news we are presented with two perfect illustrations of the kind of pig headed mentality that has brought many Flemings to the conclusion that Flanders must become independent from Belgium.
These days in Hoeilaart, we are seeing more and more French speaking signs popping up on shop windows or on houses for sale. The so called Flemish Federal (minority) parties Open VLD, CD&V and sp.a stand by and allow the Frenchifcation to happen. How is it possible here in Flanders and not in other places like Quebec? The Freedom of Language.
A freedom that leads to the oppression of others is not a freedom, it is progressive imperialism. This is what these Flemish federal minority parties as collaborators of a French progressive imperialism are endorsing not only on a local level but on a national level also. St. Genesius Rode, Wezembeek-Oppem, Linkebeek, Brussels, Enghien, Beauvechain, Jodoigne... have all demonstrated clear patterns of Frenchification. Non respect for the local community and culture should not be tolerated be it in Wallonia or in Flanders.
On Oct. 26, 2013 a protest was organised involving 90 or so different associations against Administrative sanctions in Brussels. VVB and TAK were invited by the organisers to attend. The Flemish People's Movement (Vlaams VolksBeweging, VVB) was faced with a lynch mob, dressed in Gestapo clothing, shouting that the VVBers were Fascists, and blocking them physically from participating in the protest.
This month, the Randkrant published an article entitled “The roll of language in integration.” I thought it was great until I got to the section about Taalregels (Language rules).
Taming tactics used on Flemings: 'Be Friendly'
Globalisation is not the cause of the frenchification of Flanders. Globalisation does not contradict diversity, but frenchification on the other hand does.
